Music is written on a five-line staff.

Within the staff, there are a number of measures and bar lines. A measure will contain a certain number of beats within the music, while the bar line simply separates the measures.

At the beginning of every staff you will find a clef sign.  Some players read music using a treble clef, while others read music written using a bass clef.
